In the words of Arthur Schopenhauer, ââ¬Å"Change alone is continuous, eternal and perpetual.â⬠According to this assertion, the permanency and inevitability of change can neither be underrated nor overemphasized (Smollan, 2011). The fact that not all change isà positiveà should notà deterà individuals from embracing change. However, change must be approached from an informed point of view. Both the proponents and opponents of change mustà appreciateà that all change tags along discomforts and drawbacks. According to Machiavelliââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"â⬠¦. there is nothing harder and hazardous, or more uncertain of success, than an effort to introduce a new sequence ofà thingsâ⬠¦forà the pacesetter has for enemies all those who benefit from the status quo whilst those who support the new â⬠¦will be but lukewarm defenders.â⬠This quote thus suggests that the introduction of change in any setting faces someà levelà of resistance (Robbins & Judge, 2011). ... geâ⬠must be achieved.à Resistance to change alludes to the action adopted by individuals and groups when theyà senseà that a change that is happening as a threat to them (Cartwright, 2005, p. 301).à Thisà resistanceà is encounteredà within organizations, although it can also be found in other places.à Manââ¬â¢s habitual tendency to tread the path of least resistance bars him from accepting change.à In an organization, thisà resistanceà can also be deemedà positive. Resistance to change affords aà levelà ofà stabilityà and certainty of behavior by preventingà abruptà change. Absence of such resistance would lead to aà situationà of chaotic randomness within the organization. In an attempt toà discussà the causes of resistance, this paper willà classifyà the causes into; individual resistance,à groupà resistanceà and organizational resistance (Robbins & Judge, 2011). Individual resistance Individual resistance arises due to conflicting perceptions, needs and personalities.à Most of the reasons as toà why such resistance occurs may beà lucidà or emotional. The reasons forà individualà resistanceà are listedà hereunder: Economic reasons In anà organization,à when a new technologyà is introduced, the technology willà encounterà someà levelà of resistance. The employees mayà dreadà that the new technology willà renderà themà jobless. Usually, new technology necessitatesà furtherà trainingà and replacement ofà unskilledà staffà byà skilledà staffà andà therefore, the employees willà opposeà the change.
